For a taste of adventure that everyone can enjoy, take one of the numerous hiking trips and, with a local guide, visit the truly amazing caves honeycombing the fossilised coral of the Makatea ringing the entire island of Mangaia. Toru-a-puru Cave Tour is just one of the many guided cave tours available on the Island. This is unique experience particular to the extraordinary geography of Mangaia and your guides are informative and experienced.
Mangaia is considered to be the oldest island in the Pacific, scientifically dated to around 18 million years old. This southern most outpost of the Cook Islands is a raised coral island with a sunken volcanic interior. Its limestone exterior is riddled with caves, some taking up to 8 hours to navigate.
The numerous caves that dot the interior contain stalactites and stalagmites as well as ancient burial sites. The human remains which are still in the caves date back to pre missionary times. The best way (and only way) to discover these caves is on a guided tour as most caves are on private property.
Check with Ara Moana Bungalows' hosts Jan and Tu on the availability of cave tours on arrival in Mangaia. Please make sure you have your strong trekking shoes packed before leaving for Mangaia. All Cave and Trekking tours are dependant on the weather.
