Guest House accomodation on the edge of one of the Pacific's largest lagoons. Soa's Guest House provides private guest rooms with shared facilities on the outer island of Penrhyn.
Known also as Penrhyn, is the largest northernmost island in the Cooks, some 850 miles (1400 Kilometers) north of Rarotonga. The large lagoon measures some 18 miles in width with depths of up to 350 feet. The Lagoons is some 275 square kilometers, but has a land area of just 6 square kilometers. Fish abound, as does the Pinctada Margaritifera, the wild black lipped oyster, for decades harvested for it's mother of pearl and now farmed in the production of cultured black pearls.
Like its nearest neighbor Manihiki, copra production (the drying of coconut flesh for vegetable oil extraction) has now been replaced by pearl farming and shell products as the primary economic activity.
Nevertheless the coconut remains all-important as a source of food, and materials for a multitude of uses, from mats to hats, from brooms to roofing house.
At approximately three and half hours flying time, Penrhyn boasts having the largest lagoon in the Pacific.
Accommodation here is limited to a guest house run by hosts Mama Doreen and papa Heria. Guest rooms are clean and comfortable with shared facilities. Meals are also provided.
